Hi. My name is Alla Meikson, and my family is in the United States because of HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), just like author Gary Shteyngart.

My family originally moved here from Soviet Union (USSR)—Leningrad to be exact—to reunite with family members.

The year was 1979. This was the same year that Ayatollah Khomeini seized power in Iran, and the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

I'm greatful to live proudly as a Jew and free in the US

I am grateful to HIAS for all their work, since 1881, in assisting refugees and immigrants of all backgrounds, and am most excited about their current work in Israel and the U.S., providing scholarships to those who recently have immigrated.
