Lara Vapnyar immigrated to New York from Moscow in 1994, knowing little English and dreaming of a life "full of adventure." She began writing when she couldn't find the "amazing, wonderful, exciting job" she had hoped for. In her story, she recounts her first day in America, her sense of identity today and how it translates into her work, and how her writing led to an embarrassing encounter with her daughter. This interview is part of HIAS' myStory project (www.myStory.hias.org).
